Hands On! Discovery Center announces an exciting event featuring local entrepreneur and new author, Jose Castillo.  The public is invited to a book signing and meet and greet with the author on Saturday, November 27th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.

“Make Your Mark” is an interactive children’s book set in Johnson City that features a young girl, an artist, and a wall. It highlights four unheralded individuals who made an impact on our town.

  • Colonel LeRoy Reeves, a Johnson City attorney who designed the Tennessee state flag.
  • Dr. Hezekiah Hankal, a teacher and pastor who, in 1887, became the first African American elected official in Johnson City.
  • “Blind” Lemon Jefferson, a blues and gospel musician who performed in Johnson City in the 1920s.
  • Eliza Shaut White, who helped women earn the right to vote in Tennessee.

“The book is about making your mark in this world,” said Castillo, “and it’s about finding out how you fit into the broader story.”  The book weaves the story along using art, history, and the sense of heritage and community that is found here in Johnson City.

“Make Your Mark” is available in the Hands On! Discovery Center gift shop.  During the book signing, attendees will receive 20% off the price, with admission to the Discovery Center.  Additional activities associated with the book will be available during the event.
